Our Story

Child of the Redwoods

Our Story

We never thought we’d be the kind of parents who homeschool. It took us by surprise.

We were classroom teachers — and fierce advocates for public education. But the system was exhausting, especially as we watched under-resourced students fall through the cracks and curious children lose their creative spark.

David played guitar for his high schoolers and gave them independent projects. Aubrey secretly turned her Kindergarten classroom into a prepared Montessori environment, complete with DIY materials, teaching other teachers how to do the same.

Then came the baby dreams. Aubrey earned her Montessori certification and taught in both elementary and toddler programs. David moved into EdTech, and later product development.

Our children were born. Aubrey became a stay-at-home mom. And somewhere between cross-country moves, story time snuggles on the couch, and long walks in the redwoods, we realized something big:

Our children were thriving.

And the life we had built together at home was so good — meaningful, connected, creative, nourishing.

We were homeschooling — for real.

And it felt right.

Today, we’re the co-founders of Child of the Redwoods, a parent-centered Montessori education company that supports real families with a complete homeschool system for ages 2–9.

Rooted in Montessori authenticity. Built with deep respect for the messy, beautiful rhythm of family life.

Since 2017, we’ve helped thousands of families around the world bring Montessori into their homes. We’re so glad you found your way here.

How We Became Montessori Homeschoolers

We know it can feel overwhelming. Where do you start? What lessons do you teach? How do you know if you’re "doing it right"?

If you’ve ever found yourself wondering, "Am I enough to guide my child’s education?" or "What if I miss something important?" — you’re not alone.

Here’s what you need to know: Montessori at home doesn’t have to be perfect, and it doesn’t require you to have all the answers. You just need a path, some guidance, and a little support along the way.

That’s why we created Child of the Redwoods.

A Walk In the Redwoods

Did you know that these tallest trees on Earth have some of the tiniest pinecones? And each of the 200 seeds inside has the potential to grow into a majestic, sky-reaching beauty!

It’s amazing, but a mama redwood tree has other ways to ensure the future of her family. Her roots spread wide, and little baby trees pop up right from these tendrils, forming a circle around her. Nutrients are sent right to the littles as they grow.

It’s the same for our own children. They have vast potential beyond our comprehension, and it is our job to ensure that they have what they need in order to grow and develop into their most beautiful, most brilliant selves.

Childhood is a treasure! And families matter.

Our Mission & Purpose

Child of the Redwoods was founded to help real families bring authentic Montessori education into their homes — no matter their background, income, or location.

The true method lies not in the presentation of the lessons or the prepared environment (although these are valuable pathways) but within the children themselves.

When we open our eyes to their inherent wisdom by removing the obstacles in the way of their learning, what we witness is pure magic.
