Homeschooling Year-Round? Here’s Your Summer Bucket List!

Your house is starting to feel a little cramped, and the snack requests are endless. Oh hey, summer doldrums! You’re here already, and it’s still JUNE?!

Fear not, Montessori homeschool directress! It’s the perfect time to embrace Montessori the summertime way! We’re going all in with the fun, and the less structured the better. Mess? Splashes? Glitter? Bring it on.

We’re going to make some of your child’s best memories!

☀️ Happy Montessori Summer! ☀️

  1. DIY a set of shiny, golden beads!

Pick a tutorial…any tutorial! Don’t overthink! Grab some speaker wire or pipe cleaners, some pony beads, and go for it!

  2. Give a water-pouring lesson outside!
Trust me on this. Everyone loves the water pouring lesson that’s all cute on a tiny tray in the kitchen, but this summer go outside with two of those big iced tea pitchers and pour THOSE back and forth! Make sure your child puts on their swimsuit first!

  3. Let your child climb a tree (yes, for real).
You choose the tree. Branches that are low to the ground and sturdy. Invite your child to climb it if they desire. Rule: if they can’t get up there by themselves, they don’t climb it. You will always help them down.

  4. Your coffee table is the new nature table.

Leaves, feathers, stones, shells, and whatever else they find on walks. Keep it all on a big tray. That’s the rule: it stays on the tray. If it’s too big for the tray, it can’t come inside.

  5. Wash something big. I mean BIG.
A bucket of water + dish soap + a big sponge + something huge like a tire or playground slide = instant Practical Life lesson. Another opportunity to wear the swimsuit!

  6. Grow a smell-rific herb garden.
Mint smells amazing and is fairly easy to grow, even indoors. Let your child pluck some off, wash it, and stir it into some water for a fancy-drink.

  7. Hunt for clouds and dream about them.
Is it a dog? A duck? A horse? Only your child knows for real! Go the extra mile and make up a whole story about what you see. “The horse is racing for his dinner!” “The dog is laughing at the rainbow!”

  8. Freeze smoothies into popsicles.

Let your child take control as you combine various fruits and berries, blend them with water and yogurt, and then freeze your future pops to keep you cool.

  9. Teach your child how to use a thermometer.
How hot or cool is it outside? Find out by monitoring the summer weather. Record your results!

  10. Start a jam band.

Challenge your family to use whatever household objects they can find: old pots, wooden spoons, a pair of shoes, a rustly book. Slowly add one rhythm/instrument at a time and see what happens when you make music together in a casual way.

  11. Walk around the Sun.

Technically this is called a Montessori “birthday” celebration, but who says it has to be someone’s special day to learn how the Earth goes ‘round the Sun? Not us!

  12. Repurpose your recyclables.

We want environmentalism! We want it now! And we also want to nurture creativity. 😉

  13. Practice your cursive.
Your child will want to write just like you. So take this summer to improve your own handwriting. Flourish your signature. Perfect your P’s. Do it every day. And especially make sure your child witnesses your growth mindset!

  14. Acquire the Montessori Essentials (Hint: You Don’t Need Everything)
Curious about what materials truly matter and which ones you can skip or DIY? Do we have the list for YOU!

Let us introduce you to the free and fabulous Essential Montessori Materials Checklist! It’s designed to help you get clear and confident this summer and ready to homeschool in a slightly less summery way come end of August.

👉 Grab that checklist right here.

Whether you do three things on this list or all fourteen, summer’s gonna be beautiful, baby. Reach out anytime. We’re here for it all.
