Let’s Take a Closer Look at a Scripted Lesson
Here’s an example of a fully scripted lesson from our theme Jellyfish.
Jellyfish are part of the phylum Cnidaria along with anemones and coral. It’s a high level concept, but even very little children can absorb and remember scientific vocabulary! We introduce these with careful intention.
To make abstract concepts come to life, we make the whole experience as tactile as possible.
In this case, we are constructing a model of a lion’s mane jellyfish to help children learn the parts of the jellyfish before we introduce a set of four part cards.
Because jellyfish cannot be sensorially experienced in the wild, we can create a hands on activity that helps children make that physical connection.
In the lesson below, look for the vocabulary words in bold red. This helps you, the parent, quickly take note of more complex words your child may be unfamiliar with.
You may want to slowly explain them to your child, then pause and check for understanding.
In the script, we provide definitions and even word origins to help your child gain a deeper understanding of the concepts.
Using real scientific terms is a longstanding tradition in Montessori education (yes, even for 2 year olds!) and we make it easier for parents to introduce them to their children.
You don’t have to think up the vocabulary yourself. You don’t have to look up the definitions ahead of time and try to remember them. You don’t have to google anything. All you need to do is open the scripted lesson and begin reading out loud.
Now let’s contrast this to one of our foundational lessons.
Jellyfish are invertebrates, and learning about invertebrates is in our foundational curriculum!
Here’s what a foundational lesson looks like for identifying invertebrates.
The lesson clearly states the purpose of the activity and suggests simple materials for you. Your child is going to identify animals without vertebrae, or a skull and backbone.
While reading books or while gardening or out and about, you may point out animals without backbones, like snails and butterflies or earthworms.
You’ll simply point out that they are invertebrates.
“A snail is an invertebrate,” you’ll probably instinctively say, “It doesn’t have a backbone like we do. Nope. No vertebrae.” And that’s it!
Over time, you’ll identify more and more invertebrates as you and your child happen to encounter them in real life and in pictures.
That’s a step by step foundational lesson.
