Still Feeling Confused About Montessori? That Might Actually Be a Good Thing.
If you’ve been feeling confused about Montessori recently, maybe it’s a little bit of a good thing. Confusion and uncertainty can be clarified, and this is great modeling for our children as well. It means you’re still curious, wondering, hopeful! You haven’t given up yet.
You can go one of two ways, and decision-making time is soon. You can give up entirely…or you can choose to consciously and intentionally lay out the things that are confusing you and solve each one like a mini puzzle.
Here is one question we’ve been asked a lot recently, and the answer is much easier than people think. How do I know what lessons to give my child?
Example: should I give a reading lesson this week or a life science lesson, and among the two, which one is the right one? If I teach that reading lesson, is my child ready for the movable alphabet yet? Or should I wait?
Understandable fuzziness. But don’t let this be a barrier for you!
Here’s What to Do
Three-fold.
1. First, you learn to observe your child to see what skills they already have—what they’re good at, what motivates or interests them. This informs you! It’s the first step.
2. Second, you can give the lessons in our current theme. Those are great lessons for every age child…just modify it for your child’s age and give them a demonstration.
3. Third, our curriculum has a very clear and structured Foundational scope and sequence, leveled from 1–6. All you need to do is observe to find your child’s skill level and offer your child lessons in that level. All 10 subject areas will be covered, and all the lessons are great! If you stick with the right level, you’ll be giving the exact right lessons.
