A Cosmic Education: Why Our Montessori Curriculum Is Interconnected by Design
In traditional schooling, each subject gets its own little box. First it’s math, then reading, then science. That structure may be efficient for large classrooms—but it’s not how children naturally learn.
At Child of the Redwoods, we do things differently.
We believe in a spiral curriculum, one that returns to big ideas again and again, each time with more depth and connection. It’s not just about covering subjects. It’s about weaving them together so your child can make sense of the world.
This is the heart of what Montessori calls Cosmic Education: a way of learning that honors the beauty, the logic, and the interconnection of everything.
Why We Don't Separate Subjects
In many schools, students focus on a single subject at a time. They might do 45 minutes of grammar, followed by a math lesson, then science, then history. While this discipline-specific model is efficient for scheduling, it often leads to fragmented learning. The connections between subjects, and more importantly, the relevance, get lost.
But learning doesn’t happen in silos. When your child learns about volcanoes, they’re also exploring geography, chemistry, writing, measurement, and storytelling—all at once. That’s how real learning sticks.
How Our Montessori Curriculum Builds Connections
You’ll still see subjects listed in our curriculum, Reading & Writing, Mathematics, Life Science, The Arts, and so on. They give you a helpful framework and ensure nothing essential gets missed.
But the way we deliver lessons is anything but compartmentalized.
Our Constellation studies are intentionally interdisciplinary. Every monthly study pack combines reading, science, history, geography, and the arts around a single topic. Meanwhile, our Montessori Planning Cards™ let you build an academic foundation without pulling your child out of the wonder of thematic learning.
Each week becomes a natural rhythm:
📚 Read a folktale.
🧪 Mix a science experiment.
✏️ Write a short story.
🎨 Paint a cultural landmark.
🌍 Talk about fairness or geography or weather systems—and discover how it all connects.
This is what Cosmic Education looks like in practice.
A Curriculum That Grows With Your Child
With each new level, your child spirals upward, returning to familiar concepts in new ways, with deeper understanding. We’re not just teaching isolated facts. We’re helping your child build a mental map of the universe and their place within it.
Whether they’re two years old or nine, the message is the same: Everything is connected. And you are part of it.
